Newborn Photography with Extended Family

Welcoming your newest baby to the family is quite the celebration. I often get asked if grandparents can be part of the at-home photography experience and my answer is always, yes! A collection of images from this time to make your future heart sing. This is your session. Whether we are celebrating first babies, third babies or the legacy of your family, all can be included. If you are looking for newborn photography with extended family, look no further.

Include generations of loved ones in your newborn session.

Because of my lifestyle-like photographs, creating a fun space for your children to hangout with grandma is so important. By having your loved ones over, a casual hang out vibe is created. Donuts and coffee, books to read, games to play. Anything that makes your family feel at ease and comfortable.

The family featured wanted to highlight four generations of females. We had a newborn baby, a toddler, a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother here to photograph. What an absolute joy this was.

When including grandparents though, I do have a few tips for things to go smoothly. Sometimes, having other caregivers or loved ones around seems like a good idea. That is until your children become too obsessed with grandpa and want nothing to do with mom and dad!

Tips for a smooth morning with grandma and grandpa.

First, I like to invite grandparents to come at the end of the session. This gives us plenty of time with your core family before we introduce company.

If your extended family is in town, you might want to ask them to “go get bagels” or “head out for an errand”.

Second, I do think it important to still have a cohesive color palette for styling. Our goal with wardrobes is keep the connection the focus. We do not want anyone to standout in the photo unless it is the newborn.

Lastly, prepare them to be there for a little while. Sometimes we have loftily aspirations of a quick pop in for a few photographs, but life happens. The baby needs to be fed, the young ones are too excited for the visit. When we put time limits or expectations on our session, the pressed energy is felt by all.

Remember, we want to create a space that oozes “we have aaaallll the time in the world for this.”
