I have always said, the kids run the show. Not in the sense that they are in control, but in the sense that as parents, we are often riding the waves of young emotions or on the feeding/sleeping schedules of new life. When you welcome a family photographer into the mix, the waves are still there. The baby still need to eat, the young ones need a break and it can feel overwhelming to parents who are hoping for a smooth photo session in their own home.
When investing your time, your money and your heart into hiring a professional photographer, it can be hard to let go of the stress and expectations that come along with the experience. I am here for all of it. To help, to guide, to create an environment for you and your family to feel comfortable and at ease during your session. We want your photos to feel natural and authentic to this time in your life, this includes wild toddlers and cranky babies!
I often hear client apprehensions in booking sessions with young children, sharing statements like “my kids would never sit for that” or “my child will not behave that well.” Guess what? Most toddlers do not sit still! And a child’s behavior is merely a reflection of how they are feeling. The beauty of indoor family photography is we are already in a space young children feel safe in. There is already so much pride in showing showing me where they sleep and where they play. We can engage on their level, at their pace. (A bit more on my experience with connecting with children here.)
The behind the scenes from the session below would have shown lots of movement, lots of chasing, lots of breaks, Cocomelon, a walk outside, couch jumping. I want my clients to enjoy their time together and let it flow.
Or they might be a bit shy or stand-offish at first and need a little time to come out be comfortable. They might not want their picture taken at all! I have worked with it all and we always, always make magic. I have tricks up my sleeve for daysssss.
This Philadelphia family welcomed their second daughter into the mix back in December. We had photographed her older sister only a short time before in the same house. The sessions share the same love, but each celebrate a new time in their lives to be re-lived.
