Best Places to Photograph Inside: at home Photography Sessions

Maternity, Newborn, Milestone and Family at Home Photography

When constantly bombarded with stunning outdoor locations and over the top styled family shoots, we can sometimes forget the why of lifestyle photography. We want to capture you, in your life, with your people, among your travel trinkets and thoughtful fixtures. Though there is beauty in the grand and magnificent, there is also beauty in the simple and real. You are magical in your own right, doing the things that are soooo important when it comes to raising children and building a family.

It is for that reason that at-home photography sessions, whether newborn or growing families, will always be my favorite place to capture the spirit of your favorite people.

When entering a new home, I immediately start opening curtains, lifting blinds and searching for three places to move and mingle during our session. Though I am usually hired for my creative use of unconventional, lower light areas, there definitely a few common places that tend to be great for at home photography sessions.

Living Room:  Many afternoons and evenings are spent in the living room, a comfortable place for the entire family to play, read, take naps, watch movies and just bond.  The living room often offers comfort and a sense of familiarity with the children.

Nursery:  This is the most obvious location for newborn sessions, as you are expecting a new baby and the space they will sleep, play and grow in is very special.  Though some families have their nurseries furnished, cribbed-up, stocked with books and ready to go, many other families do not and that is ok! You only need a little slice of the room to get the feel.  If there is a light source and some details to include in your visual story, then the nursery is a great place to start.

Master Bedroom:  The Master Bedroom can be a wonderful place for the entire family to get silly and for couples to feel intimate.  Whether there is plenty of natural light for everyone to dance in, or low lighting with a singular light source, this area is one you want to spend time in.

Outside your Home:  Weather depending, your outdoor space can offer a beautiful backdrop for your at-home images.  Many families with young children enjoy spending time together outside and your gardens, tomato pots and chalk-written driveway is a great place to capture families naturally engaging with each other.

Every home is so unique. That is the joy and personalization of creating a unique photography experience. The places mentioned above are good starting points, but if you want to get a bit more creative, checkout these uncommon areas of intentional use of light and places you might not think about for in home portrait photography.
