Photographing in locations that have meaning to clients is a photographers dream. This outdoorsy couple chose this location as it is one of their favorite places. Most of my photography sessions are indoors, so an outdoor maternity shoot in Eastern Maryland was unique.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING OUTDOORS
There is a specific checklist for scouting outdoor locations. Many elements play into the final feel of your images and knowing what to look for as a professional photographer is important.
Long view to the west.
Sunny and overcast options.
Distance to walk.
Terrain for littles, expecting mothers and parents.
Easy parking.
Crowds.
Dappled light.
Color and hues of light.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR OUTDOOR MATERNITY SHOOT
Though my Style Guide will give some inspiration, basic guides are layers, movement and texture. Especially when photographing outdoors, we want easy access to the belly for our bare skin belly shots.
I typically will carry your outfit changes, jackets, blankets, shoes and all accessories so you can walk freely and enjoy your evening.
WHEN TO BOOK AN OUTDOOR MATERNITY SHOOT
Here is full blog post on the details of when you book your maternity session. Typically, it really depends on your comfort level and how quickly you are showing. The 27-33 week mark is a good guideline for the reason that most women are showing by then, but feel good moving around.
THINK OF HOW YOU BOND AS A COUPLE OR FAMILY
In order to make your photos feel like you, it is important to find little ways that you bond with your family and bring them into the photos. Whether that is music, snuggling, walks, cooking or hanging in your backyard. The beach has been a staple in this couple’s courtship. Bringing that into their outdoor maternity session was important to them, which is why we chose the shore in Eastern Maryland.
LOOKING TO BOOK A MATERNITY SHOOT, BUT STILL NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR?
This expecting mother wanted indoor maternity photos with her family. Toddlers, dogs and husband included, of course. This expecting couple loves music, their dog and their patio. They chose indoor maternity photos to go with their indoor newborn session.
